Therapy for teens

Today’s teenagers carry a lot of stress and they often have issues with depression, anxiety, peer pressure, and issues with self esteem. Providing teens with the opportunity to talk freely in a safe space is critical to helping them understand their emotions and make good choices for themselves.

Many teens benefit from assistance from a trusted adult as they learn to navigate relationships, academic stress, family problems, peer pressure and becoming increasingly independent. Therapy for adolescents and teens can help improve their overall functioning at home, school, and in their relationships with friends and family members.

Common reasons for teens counseling

There are a number of reasons why a teen would want or need therapy. Some common issues addressed in teen therapy include: depression, anxiety, perfectionism, food/body image issues, gender role and sexual identity confusion, self-harm or cutting, addiction issues, past or present trauma, parent separation or divorce, bullying or social issues, poor academic performance, behavior issues or chronic lying.

If you are unsure whether or not your teen needs therapy, contact us for a free consultation with one our therapists who specialize in working with teens. We will be happy to talk through issues and make recommendations based on your unique situation. Allowing your teen some input into choosing a therapist is a good way to help them feel empowered and independent, so we are also happy to talk with your teen to explain the process of therapy and how we may be able to help them work through issues present in their life.
